Dave is encouraging and positive.  He has a great passion for the saxophone and clarinet and always wants his students to succeed.  I have learned so many things from Dave.  He also has a great and funny personality.    (as posted on KSL.com)

Dave is easily the best music teacher that I have ever had for my son.  He has a clear understanding of how to teach a child music and how to make it fun.  Dave is very dedicated to music and it show in his teaching.  My son loves his lessons!

I knew my daughter was losing interest in the sax because her teacher was... less than exciting.  After finding Dave, she has her spark back!  She loves sax and hopes to sound like Dave someday!

Some notes of recommendation...

My daughter's favorite music teacher!

My daughter has been taking lessons from Dave since she first started on saxophone. To say that I am impressed would be an understatement. She has learned so much and progressed so far! And she really looks forward to seeing Dave every week. Dave's pretty humorous, and his personality gives him the ability to connect with his students. So he keeps them progressing while still making it fun for them. Most importantly, he is an excellent teacher. I highly recommend him.  (as posted on KSL.com)

My Background

I began my musical quest early in life starting with the clarinet and adding saxophone and flute in Jr High and High School.  I now make my living as a musician; teaching, performing, and doing instrument care and repair.

I began teaching in college and my studio has grown over the 20+ years since.  I have proudly seen dozens of students grow from introductory lessons to music majors in college, all under my instruction.

In my own educational quest, I have my Master's Degree in Jazz Performance and Composition from the University of Utah.  I have also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Ray Smith, Brian Booth, Greg Floor, and Russell Schmidt.

What you can expect...

I work with each individual student to determine the best lesson plan for their goals.  Whether they are interested in a classical clarinet focus, or a little jazz saxophone, we'll find the best mix to keep them engaged and excited about learning music!

  • Jazz & Classical Genres

  • Basic and advanced music theory concepts

  • Jazz theory including chord recognition with an emphasis on improvisation

  • Use of standard curricula as well as customized lesson plans

  • Computer-aided studio, including Smart Music, Band-in-a-Box, Finale, Sonar, and studio-quality recording equipment

I often get questions about preferred equipment.  Which saxophone should a student be playing?  Which reed? Etc.  Here is a collection of my thoughts on equipment:  "Instruments & Materials"
